Frontiers Blog have released an article on how scientists predict that in just 30 years there will be 10 billion people on earth, 2.5-billion more than now. Feeding this many people presents a significant challenge to agriculture as we know it. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that by 2050 food production will need to increase by around 70%. Certain microbes and fungal parasites can fool the immune system of plants, sometimes causing devastating crop failures. Scientists working on this area hope that they can help develop novel and effective strategies to protect crops from microbial invaders in order to help guarantee food security in the future.
